President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has pardoned 57 Bangladeshis convicted by the UAE Federal Court. They will soon be sent back to Bangladesh.
On Tuesday morning (September 3) at a meeting with media editors and businessmen at the Rashtriya Yamuna Guest House, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said. This information came in a message sent by the Chief Advisor’s press wing.
On July 19, a court in the country sentenced 57 Bangladeshis to prison terms for protesting in the United Arab Emirates in solidarity with the quota reform movement. Three of them were sentenced to life in prison, 53 to 10 years in prison and one to 11 years in prison.
The state-owned Emirates News Agency (WAM) said at the time that they would be repatriated after their prison terms were over.
According to a report by Emirates News Agency (WAM), these people were protesting against their country’s government. An eyewitness confirmed that they organized large-scale protests on several roads in the Emirates in protest against the decision taken by the Bangladeshi government.
Meanwhile, on August 18, Law and Development Foundation chairperson Fawzia Karim claimed in a press conference, then the (embassy) officials told Dubai officials that they were terrorists, (expatriate activists) anti-independence, they would have no objection if arrested. Because of this, no legal assistance was provided. The Foreign Office wrote to every embassy asking them (the protesters) to be silenced and punished.
He also said that we have written to the chief advisor and other advisors of the foreign affairs advisor. They should deal with the remittance fighters. We will provide legal support from the country.
On that day, Fawzia Karim Feroz also said that the Consul General of Dubai is BM Jamal Hussain. But he is the most responsible person and responsible for punishing these 57 people. He did not provide any kind of legal support. He called them (agitators) anti-freedom. It was a very favorable dialogue. If the anti-independence Shabir group had not agreed to this, I would have become a member of another party. You are anti-liberal. I heard this myself when I was in the Human Rights Commission.
He said, not only 57 people. More people have been arrested. Many do not know that there is no trace of him. Not only in the Emirates, but in other countries as well. Some relatives have come to us. Those who are not among the 57 people. We will provide all the help. We are trying a volunteer experience in Dubai. The government should take action immediately.
Following this incident, it was condemned by the US-based international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the National Human Rights Commission.
